Brush up on poker lingo

When you’ve just got into playing poker, you may not be familiar with a lot of the terms that are used around the game. When you play poker online, you’ll find that there are lots of poker tutorial videos where you can watch different moves in a game of poker, and often the phrases below will crop up in those tutorials. When you see them being used alongside a real game of poker, they make a lot more sense.

At 32red online casino, as a new player, you’ll be able to earn up to $1,000 in a welcome bonus and you’ll also get six entries to £500 freeroll tournaments. Gradually poker phrases will become a lot more meaningful as you become familiar with the rules and playing of poker. But in the meantime, here are some brief definitions to get you started:

1. Flop

The flop is the dealing of the first three community cards in Texas Hold’em or Omaha Hold’em, as well as a few other poker variations. In Texas Hold’em, the flop is dealt after the players’ hands have been dealt and the first bets have been placed. After the flop, more bets are placed and the flop is followed by the turn (fourth card), more betting and then the river (fifth card).

2. Tilt

People who play ‘on tilt’ when playing poker tend to leave common sense behind them. They forget about a measured approach to the game and other players can use this to their advantage. The term comes from the world of pinball games, where players used to tilt the machine to get the ball to roll in the direction that they wanted.

3. Blinds

Blinds are mandatory bets placed before the cards are dealt by two players at the poker table. Blinds were introduced to add excitement and action to the game. In a game of tournament poker, the blinds are increased at different pre-agreed intervals. They’re called blind bets as they are placed before the players see the cards.

4. The nuts

If someone holds the ultimate poker hand, it’s often said that they’re holding the ‘nuts’. This isn’t a reference to any anatomical feature; the saying dates back to the days of he Wild West, where a player might bet his wagon if they were confident of the strength of their hand. If so, the nuts oand bolts of the wagon wheel were placed on the poker table to ensure the player would not make a hasty exit if they lost the game.

5. Fish

A fish at the poker table is someone who lacks experiences. It’s easy to see that they lack knowledge and experience of the game and more experienced players can easily exploit their ignorance and reel them into folding.

With a little practice at the online poker tables you shouldn’t be a fish for long and you never know, it could soon be you who’s holding the nuts!
